A top quality double bass circa 1720 of violin outline,
flat back with angle. Nicely proportioned and with a wonderful golden-brown
varnish. An interesting feature of this instrument and one that
is often found on early Italian instruments (see pages 189 - 193
of "Les Violons" for pictures of a bass with similar features
by Dominico Busan) can be seen at the bottom back which shows some
simple carving in relief. The back of the scroll also shows some
interesting carved details mixed with some highly decorative inlays
of purfilling in diagonal forms. The table shows figure from wood
cut on the quarter while the ribs and back are relatively plain.
The shapely F`s are positioned relatively close together on this
instrument. Now fitted with highly regarded Innovation strings by
Picato the rich, clear sound is of a distinct quality. An exceedingly
rare instrument ideal for orchestral, solo work or period music.
