A good Hawkes Professor double
bass. Unlabelled. Probably made just after circa 1900.
Some well repaired but minor restorations have taken
place mainly in the rib areas. The table and back are structurally
in first class condition. Overall a nicely presented violin form
instrument with a flat back and angle break that feels much more
comfortable to play than the huge swell backs of the Concert and
Panormo model instruments. Wooden pins positioned in each corner
of the table and back suggest that this instrument that may have
been used in the tropics. Fitted outside linings also give the impression
of robustness and durability. An original good rich dark brown varnish
shows evidence of heavy usage in places.
With a brand new fingerboard and a full set of the
impressive (impressively expensive) "Baker" style machines
and endpin unit made and fitted by Barnaby this instrument packs
an incredible forte sound and fit is in just great in the section.
