Simply stunning can only describe the quality, condition
and sound of this instrument. You'll certainly take my word
for this description as soon as you cast your eyes on this beauty,
for in all honesty this is about as fine-an-example of this style
of Lamy instrument that you are likely to find anywhere in the world.
This is the full-swell backed version of those distinctive deep-plumb-red
viol-shaped instruments that were produced in both Mirecourt and
Paris around the turn of the twentieth century. The materials used
in the construction of this instrument are really first class. There
is a two-piece back that's shows a flame, medium in width
of real beauty, there's matching wood in the ribs and neck
while choice straight-grained spruce with an even medium/large-medium
grain has been selected for the table.
Although this is without question a largish instrument
with slightly higher, more rounded shoulders that the violin outline
instruments, it is precisely due to the large 'plate' (table and
back) areas and generous depth to the ribs that makes this instrument
capable of producing an absolutely awesome volume of sound. Of course
the 'The Contrabass Shoppe' has gone to it is usual no expense spared
philosophy in putting this instrument into a top and up to date
playing specification. We've found it necessary to thin out
the front and fit a new bass bar. There's been some half-edging
and edging work where necessary, there's been a new fingerboard,
bridge, soundpost and endpin unit fitted followed by some minor
varnishing work. Of course it goes with out saying that any cracks
(there were one or two minor ones in the ribs) have been glued and
studded without compromise.
This has to be the ultimate instrument for any jazz
player. The sound is free and easy, the feel is fine, cool and dandy,
there's volume, there's sustain, there are all the colours under
the rainbow and then there are the looks. Still retaining it is original
label, this instrument is so close to being mint, it is scary. Just
how does the 'Contrabass Shoppe'
manage to find instruments like this?
