Only one lady owner since
new - as they say in the car-trade. Cherished since it
was bought brand new during the 1950's by it is sole owner,
this near mint condition instrument shows only the slightest
signs of wear to the varnish on it's top shoulders. This nicely
proportioned instrument is literally crack free.
In terms of form and construction it is viol shaped
and has a swell back. The maple wood used for the back and ribs
is lightly flamed in a most attractive way while the maple neck
shows a figure of the most stunning tight figure. In addition there
are outside linings that add strength and robustness to the instrument
while the back of the peg-box is characterised by a cut-out that
makes the chore of re-stringing so much easier. As for the set up
of this instrument, no expense has been spared. There is a grade
one fingerboard of the densest ebony that I have ever witnessed.
It has been 'dressed' to the highest of standards. The
endpin unit is hand-made by Barnaby of Louth, Lincolnshire and is
a smooth operating classic based on an English design. What more
can I say except that with the benefit of a new bass bar this instrument
now emit is the sort of bass sounds that every player should be seeking
whether your need is in the symphony orchestra or in that jazz quintet.
Still bearing it's original J. Thibouville-Lamy
& Co, London & Paris label this elegant French bass must
be a high priority for anyone wanting that elusive-sounding, great
condition, easy-play instrument.
Here's how the instrument measures up. Just
take a look at that cool-easy string length!
Width at the upper bout 20.7in (52.5cm)
Width at the centre bout 15in (38.2cm)
Width at the lower bout 26.2in (66.6cm)
LOB 44.5in ( 113.0cm )
String length 41.2in ( 104.7cm )
