It seems strange that an instrument with so little
structural damage should have a varnish from a later period. Yes
it is unfortunate, but lets not dwell on the one negative point
for too long because this instrument has a great many qualities
to offer especially in the sound, structural and financial departments.
Sound is obviously the most important aspect for
any player so I just want to you to concentrate on the words 'quality'
and 'volume'. Structural condition is just as important
as sound for any player because one certainly doesn't want
to find ones instrument falling apart when the pressure is on in
a Brahms or Bruckner Symphony.
Here The Contrabass Shoppe
can assure you that every attention to detail has been paid to the
inside of the instrument. In addition to new upper and lower back
braces, new centre joint studs and first class stud work to the
two flank cracks on the lower bouts of the table and the small saddle
crack, there is a new bass bar that correlates correctly to the
arch of the table. On the outside of the instrument a new neck and
fingerboard has been fitted - it feels great- while the cogs and
worms have been salvaged from a retired Hawkes Panormo instrument.
One can't get much better quality than these. The gearing
is absolutely superb. In addition, a new bridge, endpin unit and
strings by D'Addario (Helicore) complement this instrument and courtesy
of Martyn Bailey, our gifted restorer, there is a superb fingerless
extension fitted. It will enable the prospective purchaser of this
instrument to reach a really splendid sounding low 'C'
with ease.
As for the financial department, we can
assure you that it's not bad value at all. Certainly this
is an extremely good workhorse of an instrument that will do all
the biz for many years to come. The instrument bears it is original
Hawkes & Son label from Denmark Street, Piccadilly Circus, London
dated 1904, No 3160.
