| For the 'period' music maker 'The Contrabass Shoppe'
is pleased to offer an example of really first class quality that
dates most probably from sometime during the second half of the
nineteenth century. The stick of these 'later' bows are typically
more straight that the earlier upward camber of the true 'Dragonetti'
examples and this one comes with a 'moveable' frog, the hair being
tightened by means of an nickel and ebony screw-type adjuster. In
the last few years there has been a sudden resurgence of interest
in this type of bow by both Baroque players and a growing number
of enthusiastic player-collector type persons, consequently there
is now considerable difficulty in finding good specimens such as
this.
We estimate this bow to date from about circa 1850.
The frog is fully-mounted with a nickel-silver ferrule, full-back
slide and bottom plate. The frog is moved by means of a nickle-silver
and ebony (sandwich) screw type button. Each side of the frog is
decorated by a large (11mm diameter) and distinctive mother-of-pearl
dot. The origional ivory face has the added advantage of being "recessed"
so as to maintain a ribbon of hair.
This is an exceptional quality bow. Here's
why. It's all to do with the quality of the pernambuco and
of the actual craftsmanship and carving of the bow. In this bow
both the quality of the wood and the craftsmanship are of the highest
order. Firstly the stick - it is close-grained pernambuco
of exceptional quality. Secondly - just take a look at the head
of the bow - it really is beautifully carved. Notice too the
beautiful strong grain markings.
A 150-year-old bow in virtually mint condition. Now
presented with a solid silver and black-silk lapping. This is without
doubt one of the finest quality Baroque bows that the Contrabass
Shoppe has ever seen. Weight with silver and silk lapping - 181gms.
