This is a top-flight Italian from the first quarter
of the 18th century. An instrument of near perfect proportions,
an instrument of unsurpassable beauty, an instrument with a quality
of sound only comparable to the finest of red wines. Simply put,
this instrument is at the very top of every double bass players
wanted list.
The term "Circle"
is often applied to an instrument where it is of the opinion that
the instrument was executed by a contemporary of the named maker
and exhibit is his characteristics. With this particular instrument
our opinion is supported by photographs of a certified Guadagnini
double bass that once belonged to a distinguished (now deceased)
London principal player which were presented in the February 1991
Strad article "Concerning Double Basses" by Duane Rosengard.
There are numerous
stylistic trait is in the carving of the scroll, the carving of the
F's, the shaping of the corners and the inlaying of the purfilling
but the following are especially interesting:
a) The model. Both
these instruments would have been made with flat backs that inclined
very slightly towards the neck button. The angle breaks that are
now present on both instruments would have been added at a later
period.
b) The scroll.
Both instruments have an extra turn in their volute.
c) Wood used: Both
instruments display wood of similar characteristics.
d) Varnish: Both
instruments use the most exquisite varnish that is applied in
a similar way, over a yellow ground.
A whole host of correctional
work totalling just over £ 8 400-00 has placed this instrument
into the extremely fine condition that you now find it. A copy of
the repair invoice and a digital print out of the internal table
come with the instrument.
This is
without question an instrument of immense importance and appeal.
