Looking for a superb sounding solo bass?

Yes, well this is just the job for you. With a back length of 103.6cm and a string length of only 100.0cm - this instrument will make all those difficult concerto passages seem just so easy.

What does it sound like?

I'd say that it is brilliant, clear and projecting. Exactly what is required if you intend to stand up on stage and do a recital. There's plenty of power on tap too. For such a petit instrument this quality of sound is really special.

Italian. Where from?

Unfortunately there are no labels or internal inscriptions to help us on this one - but the slightly rustic style of making, use of slab-cut spruce for the table and the use of a species of ash for the construction of the ribs confirm that the instrument is Italian. With regard to a region of Italy - well that's much more difficult and an opinion would be conjecture - but the arching, corners and carving of the scroll do suggest a Neapolitan influence from around the turn of the twentieth century.

That's an unusual looking fingerboard.

Yes it is. That's because we've shaped the fingerboard-end with the soloist in mind. Extra length on the treble side will allow you to play up to a top G - right on the end on the fingerboard while we've cut away the board over the A & E strings to allow more clearance for forceful bowing on these strings.

That's an unusual looking tailpiece.

Yes it is. It's called a 'Compensated' tailpiece and it's been designed to close the variation in cog-to-tailpiece distance between the G/D strings and A/E strings. Apart the fact that it looks good the benefit is are reputedly found in the sound of the instrument - with more evenness right across the strings being cited as the main one.

Will I fall in love with this instrument?

We'd like to think so simply because the instrument is just so much fun to play. But if budget is on your mind we also think that you'd be very hard pushed to find another solo instrument - let alone another Italian solo instrument - in this condition and with this quality of sound for less money.

If you're looking to make a career out of playing solos then this baby for you. For sure it's a career-making instrument that will pay for it iself in no time.
