Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock - 10mm.

A bass wheel with a lock. Are you kidding me?

No - it's absolutely true. This is the well made, hi-tech Megzy Bass Transport Wheel - with a bonus feature - namely a wheel lock.

Is this a world first in bass wheel design?

Yes - we believe it is.

How does it work?

Like all the best designs - it is beautifully simple. Affixed to the top cross bar of the wheel bracket is a small metal lock assembly. The lock assembly consists of a thin L-shaped plate of 0.8mm gauge metal and a moulded plastic leaver. To lock the wheel all you have to do is push the small leaver down with your foot until you hear it click. That's all there is to it. When the leaver or peddle is pushed down it pushes the metal plate onto the top of the wheel which prevents it moving. To release the wheel you just flick the lock leaver up with the tip of your shoe.

Does it take much effort to depress the lock leaver?

No - not at all. The pressure required seems very natural and in a strange sort of way very satisfying to use. As I mentioned previously you get that nice "click" sound when the lock has fully engaged with the wheel.

How incredibly ingenious.

Yes - it is very cleaver indeed. What's more - the whole locking process is quick to use and fully effective at stopping the wheel from moving.

The pin on the wheel looks much longer than the ones found on other wheels. Why is that?

To apply and release the lock leaver you need to be able to slip the front of your foot underneath the bottom of your instrument. Having a longer pin enables the wheel to be extended further from the endpin unit which in turn makes locking and unlocking the wheel much easier.

Can you tell me how long the pin is on the Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock please?

Most bass wheels are fitted with a useable pin length of around about 82mm. The Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock has a useable pin length of 182mm.

How useful do you think a lock on a bass wheel really is?

It's a very nice feature indeed. Every time you travel you'll no longer have to keep putting your bass down on the floor just to take the wheel out and put the endpin back in. Just imagine being able to stand on a bus or on the train with the lock on - you'll be all nice and relaxed and totally in control of your instrument.

No more awkward clutching of my pride and joy when I go to buy tickets at the station or purchase a drink at a vending machine - sounds absolutely fabulous to me.

Yes - The Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock is certain to improve your bass playing days.

What else will I like about the Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock?

The Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock has really great hi-tech looks, it is very well made, the 150mm diameter wheel is a perfect size for swift speed of travel, it works well on a variety of surfaces and what is more - the price is highly competitive.

What is the bracket and pin made from?

They are made from powder coated steel.

So it is a pretty strong piece of kit?

Yes indeed it is.

I see that the wheel hub features five spokes and the wheel rim features twelve short spokes. Is that to keep the weight down to a minimum without compromising on strength?

Yes. As mentioned earlier - the wheel has been designed and manufactured with a lot of thought and care. In fact the average weight of the whole unit is only 782gms.

That's pretty impressive. Another question if I may. Does the wheel hub incorporate ball bearings for an ultra smooth ride?

Yes indeed. Quality steel roller bearings at the centre of the wheel hub reduce wear and friction and allow the wheel to turn round effortlessly and smoothly - even under high loads.

Does the tyre help contribute to a super smooth ride?

Yes indeed. The tyre is made from a "non-marking" durable elastomeric compound - very similar to that found in high performance inline skates.

Well - I'm not too well informed on the merits of elastomeric compounds - but as long as it helps absorb shock from the sort of lumps, bumps and fissures that are commonly found on most pavement surfaces - I'll be pretty happy.

The feedback that we have received from several purchasers of the Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock has been overwhelmingly positive.

Do you have a short review that I can read please?

Here is one from Joanna - a second year bass year student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

"Dear Contrabass Shoppe. I'm absolutely delighted with my Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock. When I travel on the Metrolink I no longer have to put my bass down on the ground to take the wheel out. It saves me so much time and effort. In addition the wheel is so easy and safe to use. Thank you so much."

What is the average diameter of the pin?

There is a tiny, tiny variation between each unit due to the thickness of the powder coating. Using electronic digital callipers and a random sample of five units - we calculated that the average diameter of the pin is 10.14mm.

Before I invest in a bass wheel what is the best general advice that you can offer?

Firstly always make sure that you can take the existing pin right out from the unit and secondly always check the diameter of the existing pin.

If I use a bass wheel could it cause damage to my instrument?

It is OK to use a bass wheel but please, please, always use some common sense on which surfaces you use your wheel.

What sort of players are buying the Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock?

Whether you are young in years, middle aged or getting on in your playing career the Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock can easily be used by every type of player from students to teachers and from amateurs to professionals.

Time for a summary:

There really is very little on the market that comes anywhere close to the robust construction, rugged-techie good looks, über-smooth performance and competitive price of the Megzy Bass Transport Wheel with Lock.
