Pops is a very popular choice of rosin that produces
really excellent grip and a good positive sound.
It is definitely one of the more sticky rosins available and
as such the manufacturers do warn on the outside of the tub "Keep
Pops rosin in this container". On an extremely hot day when
the traffic is bad and you do eventually get into the rehearsal
two minutes late - there really is nothing more frustrating that
finding that you forgot to close the lid of your Pops after the
last concert and it has melted like sticky toffee into the bottom
corner of your accessory pocket in your brand new bass cover.
Still - don't let this put you off investing in Pops because for
general playing it is very, very good.
For Brahms or Beethoven symphonies where 20% extra sound is demanded
by your principal - and shall we say Pops is used more than sparingly
- it is absolutely brilliant.
Pops rosin was created some thirty years ago
by Len "Pops" Manno
who played double bass with the Houston Symphony Orchestra for
41 years. It is still made in Houston, Texas, USA where the rosin
is hand-mixed for high quality control and clear purity. The rosin
comes in a funky red plastic pot with gold label. Nice-one Pops!
